Pet Surgery

There are moments when our four-legged family members may need more than just a routine check-up; they may require surgery. This can happen when less invasive treatments are unable to effectively address their health issues or if your pet experiences trauma, such as from an accident or other emergency. At Westwood Pet Care, we understand how nerve-racking it can be to hear that your pet needs surgery, whether it’s due to an accident or other underlying health issue.

Our veterinarians perform surgeries ranging from routine spay and neuter procedures to advanced soft tissue procedures. They are trained to work on many organs including the gastrointestinal (GI), stomach, spleen, bladder, skin, and more. Whether your pet is having a routine dental cleaning or an advanced lifesaving surgery, our skilled veterinarians are there to support you and your pet through surgery and recovery. Some common sedated and surgical procedures we perform include:

  • Dental cleanings and extractions
  • Foreign GI surgeries
  • Bladder stone surgery
  • Mass removals
  • Sterilization procedures (spays and neuters)
  • Laceration and wound repair
  • And more!

The Journey Through Surgery at Westwood Pet Care

Pre-Surgery

We believe that each pet deserves nothing less than the most meticulous care. For all non-emergency surgeries, we begin with a comprehensive physical examination.  Our professional team routinely handles spays and neuters of dogs and cats.  X-rays, ultrasounds, and other procedures enable us to gain a clearer picture of the cause of your pet’s health issue. This enables us to determine if surgery can be avoided, or if it is required, to find the most effective surgical intervention to provide the best chance of recovery.

Our team will provide you with specific instructions prior to scheduled surgery.  If you have any questions about what you need to do to prepare your pet, do not hesitate to call or e-mail us.

Surgery

Our veterinary professionals will give you specific instructions for surgery day.  In most cases, we ask that surgical patients be dropped off early to spend the morning with us.  Our skilled veterinary staff take pride in administering a clean animal hospital that prioritizes the health and comfort of your pet.  Our qualified veterinary professionals be in touch with you throughout the day.

Post-Surgery

Post-surgery, your pet will be under careful observation by our compassionate staff until they are ready to return to your loving care at home. We guide you through each step of their recovery journey, providing detailed aftercare instructions and being available for any concerns you may have.

For many surgeries, pets can safely return home the same day.  The team will let you know about your pet’s individual circumstances and provide you with instructions to continue to support your pet through their recovery.

As part of our commitment to your pet’s well-being, we’re here to assist you in identifying potential post-surgery issues such as bleeding, swelling, or changes in appetite or behavior. You’re not alone in this process!  We’re here to answer any questions, advise on necessary medications, and suggest other ways to make your pet comfortable post-operation.
